James W. Windhorst died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, at his home in Paonia. He was 81.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1935, in Chicago, Ill., to Edith Windhorst. He attended school in Chicago; however, prior to finishing school, James enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps.
On June 22, 1955, he married Carol Peterson in Chicago.
Mr. Windhorst was a member of the Hotchkiss Elks Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and trips to Blackhawk and Mesquite with his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Carol Windhorst of Paonia; three sons, James Windhorst of Thornton, Raymond Windhorst of Paonia and Thomas Windhorst of Thornton; three brothers, Bill Windhorst of Montana, Art Windhorst of Florida and John Windhorst of Indiana; one sister, Judy Erickson of Arizona; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Windhorst.

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
