Joan Mathewson of Paonia died Nov. 23, 2016. She was 82.
She was born in Paterson, N.J., on March 27, 1934, to Howard and Mary Redmond. She grew up in New Jersey and moved west to attend Colorado Women's College. She graduated with an associate degree in education.
On May 21, 1956, she married John Mathewson in La Jolla, Calif. The family lived in North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and California before moving overseas. They lived in South Yemen, England, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tanzania and Nigeria.
She learned to speak both French and Arabic, and while living in Egypt, she began playing tennis. She was ranked as the number two female player in the country before moving to Saudi Arabia.
When her husband was transferred to Saudi Arabia, Mrs. Mathewson began her career as a winemaker. She used her French skills to study oenology at Changins in Switzerland where she earned the degree of maitre du cave.
She and her husband founded Terror Creek Winery on Garvin Mesa outside of Paonia. It was the first winery in the North Fork Valley. The Mathewsons operated it for the past 27 years.
She enjoyed spending time with her children and husband, skiing, being in the mountains and exploring local cultures.
Mrs. Mathewson is survived by her husband of 60 years, John Mathewson of Paonia; two sons, John (Mary Ellen) Mathewson of Golden and Eric (Samantha) Mathewson of Purcellville, Va.; and six grandchildren.
