John Austin

John Frost Austin died Feb. 24, 2017, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was thrown 90 feet by a hit and run driver last May, an accident that ultimately led to his death. He was 84.

He was born in Ponca City, Okla., to Hazel (Chapman) and Jack Austin on Dec. 18, 1932. He moved to Colorado in 1950 and graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1954. He settled in Littleton where he had an extensive career in petroleum engineering.

In early 2000, he bought a peach orchard in Hotchkiss and recently finished turning it into a vineyard. He was a member of the Kiwanis, book clubs and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Delta.

He is survived by his children, Janet, Rusty, Cynthia, Courtney and Kurt; their mother, Betty Austin; nine grandchildren, David Austin, Austin Hair, Natalie Stratman, Graham Henderson, Frank Henderson, Molly Hair, Catherine Hair, Achille Austin and Augustus Austin; and one great-grandson.

Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his son, Richard; two sisters, Elizabeth Hallmark and Sally Scoggins; and one granddaughter, Antonia.

A service will be held Friday after Thanksgiving 2017, near Golden. Exact times and location will be announced at a later date.
