John Barcus

John Franklin Barcus died Nov. 25, 2016, at the home of his daughter in Grand Junction. He was 92.

He was born in Panora, Iowa, Sept. 26, 1924, to Wesley and Francis Barcus. When he was 14, his family moved to Fruita. He graduated from Fruita Union High School in 1942. He worked for the railroad as a telegraph operator and served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines for two years. He owned and operated a filling station in Fruita before going to work for the post office.

He married Earlynne Butters on June 24, 1950. They lived in Fruita until her retirement in 1989, when they moved to Crawford.

He was a member of the Crawford Community United Methodist Church, Canyon Wrenderings Audubon Society, Friends of the Crawford State Park and North Fork Trails Network, which he and Earlynne founded. In Fruita he was a volunteer firefighter for 20 years and a Boy Scout leader for 12 years. He kept the official weather for Fruita for 18 years and unofficially for Crawford for many years after moving there. He was an outfitter and guide for mule deer for 12 years.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and Supper Club gatherings. This group got together once a month after high school and is still active among the surviving four.

Mr. Barcus is survived by two sons, Gary (Wendi) Barcus of Ventura, Calif., and Marty (Debbie) Barcus of Hamilton, Mont.; daughter, Janie (Duane) White of Grand Junction; a granddaughter, Taylor Barcus; two stepgrandchildren, Heather King and Sean Beinlich; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Elizabeth Hollandsworth of Durango; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlynne; and siblings, Willard Barcus, Mary Caldwell, Helen Barcus and Ruth Barcus.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Crawford Community United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tonya Whaley officiating.
