John Sidney Vanderpool died May 4, 2016, at his home in Delta. He was 85.
Inurnment has taken place at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta, with Pastor Carol Rhan officiating and military honors by Lee Marts VFW Post #3571. A memorial service was held May 7 at Delta United Methodist Church.
Mr. Vanderpool was born in Bakersfield, Calif., Aug. 12, 1930, to Burton and Elizabeth (Cline) Vanderpool. He spent his childhood in Bakersfield and Catalina, Calif. He attended Bakersfield High School, the junior college in Bakersfield and Colorado School of Mines.
On May 15, 1965, he married Ida Bertha Thoma in Leadville. They moved from Grand Junction to Delta nine years ago. Previously, they lived in Nucla for 11 years.
Mr. Vanderpool was a member of Delta United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He was an active member of the Navy Reserves for 30 years.
He was the mayor of Nucla and started the prairie dog shoot in Nucla. He enjoyed his grandchildren's sporting activities, collecting stamps, his church and participating in the church choir.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ida Vanderpool of Delta; two sons, Vincent (Margaret) Wilkinson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mark (Clare) Vanderpool of Wichita, Kan.; six daughters, Holly Vanderpool of Delta, Terri (Mark) Gomes of Nickerson, Kan., Sherri (Shane) Stevens of Nickerson, Kan., Beatrice Hauschulz of Las Vegas, Nev., Heidi (Mark) Giroux of Queen City, Ariz., and Margaret (Paul) Baier of Delta; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Frank.
