Jose H. Abeyta died Nov. 14, 2016.
He was born in La Puente, N.M., May 28, 1949, to Jose and Manuelita Abeyta.
His family moved to Delta in 1957. Mr. Abeyta attended school and graduated from Delta High School in 1967.
In 1969, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and received training as a fixed wing aircraft mechanic. He completed one tour in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1971.
On May 1, 1971, he married Loretta Espinosa. They made their home in Colorado Springs. Mr. Abeyta worked full-time and went to the University of Colorado - Colorado Springs, where he earned a degree in sociology. He worked as a parole officer and a probation officer.
In 1978, the Abeytas moved to Montrose. Mr. Abeyta rose to the position of chief probation officer for the 7th Judicial District. He served on numerous committees and boards during his career. In 2006, he was elected to the Montrose City Council and in 2009 he became mayor of Montrose.
He enjoyed working on his farm, raising cattle and sheep, and helping those in need.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Loretta Abeyta; two sons, Lenny (Laura) Abeyta and Juan Abeyta; grandchildren, Brittany and Joshua Abeyta and John Bailly; a sister, Leontina (Leo) Covert; brothers, Milton (Rosie) Abeyta, Robert (Carmen) Abeyta and Allen (Mary) Abeyta.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jose Dario Jr.
Interment has taken place at Cedar Creek Cemetery.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
