The combined Paonia/Hotchkiss speech and debate team is honored to host the regional national qualifying Congress this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12 and 13, at Paonia High School.
Judges for the three sessions are needed. PHS and HHS teachers and parents of speech and debate students are not eligible. Nine judges are required for each of the three-hour sessions, and judges may participate in one, two or all three sessions. A brief training on the judging process and food will be provided for all judges.
The first session will be held from approximately 4:30-7:30 p.m.; the second session runs Saturday from 8-11 a.m., and the final session runs from 12:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The event provides a great opportunity to see the local student Congress at work, said coach Stacey Cole. In Congressional Debate, students emulate members of the U.S. Congress by debating bills and resolutions, which are often written and submitted by students. Teams research as many topics as possible, with a goal of being able to speak on both sides of each piece of legislation.
Those interested in judging can contact Cole at 527-4882 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
