Kent Brakken

Cedaredge resident Kent Tenny Brakken died June 8, 2017, from injuries sustained in a car accident in Ogallala, Neb.

He was born Oct. 26, 1945, to Carl and Grace Brakken in Cable, Wis. He spent his childhood and attended school in Cable, Wis., graduating from Cable High School in 1963. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin at Madison; his master's degree at the University of Washington; and earned his doctorate in range science from Colorado State University in 1973.

Mr. Brakken served overseas in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was an active member of the National Ski Patrol for over 30 years.

He worked for the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and in the private and public sectors of the energy industry. These positions moved him and his family across the country, including Alaska, Tennessee, Ohio and Colorado. He retired from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2007 and settled in Cedaredge.

Mr. Brakken was a volunteer for the Cedaredge Senior Center and served on the board of directors for several years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and skiing in western Colorado. He also enjoyed his time with family and friends, spending his summers at his lake cabin in Cable, Wis., and traveling, both domestic and abroad.

He is survived by his three children, Erika (Joseph) Gabrielli of Santa Barbara, Calif., Nicholas Brakken of Lakewood and Hollie (Charl Oosthuizen) Brakken of Lakewood; sister, Jani Brakken of St. Paul, Minn; brother, James Brakken of Cable, Wis.,; grandchildren, Caleb Brakken, Millie Oosthuizen and Maya Gabrielli; and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard.
