DMS completes a boat five years in the making

Dan Dunham, an applied technologies teacher at Delta Middle School, started teaching advanced technologies to students in 2011 by having them construct a 116-foot McKenzie Drift boat. Some of his students have been working on this one major project and it is finally completed.

DMS students stage melodrama

Delta Middle School students recently performed a melodrama entitled "Dogsbreath Devereaux the Dastardly Doctor or Nurses! Foiled Again!" Directed by Dan Dunham, a DMS theater teacher, the cast of sixth graders made the audience "boo," "yay," and "hiss" at just the right times.

BEST grant awarded for DMS construction

Delta County Joint School District #50 has received preliminary notice of a $10 million BEST (Building Excellent Schools Today) grant to be used for replacement of the sixth grade wing and the cafeteria at Delta Middle School. Other improvements are geared toward student and staff safety.

Sheryl Yeager has been named principal of Delta Middle School for the 2017-18 school year. Yeager and her husband Kelly moved to the area in 1998.

Delta Middle School students challenged

Delta Middle School is one of 70 schools across the state participating in the Protect What's Next Challenge, a retail marijuana prevention program from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The challenge is a fun and easy way for schools to engage students with a positive message about prioritizing personal goals over retail marijuana use by having them complete quick, unique activities as a reminder of what it's like to set and accomplish goals.

A grant application that would have funded an addition to Delta Middle School did not receive priority from the Colorado Department of Education, but has been placed in the "backup" category.

Delta County Joint School District #50 submitted an application for a Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant in the amount of $11.3 million, pledging a matching contribution of $3.4 million for the Delta Middle School project.

"We stand in the midst of true patriots and the family and friends of those who have nobly served," said Jen Ervin, Delta Middle School principal, as she welcomed those gathered for a Veterans Day assembly at Delta Middle School. While veterans were small in number, over half the students and faculty members stood when family members of active and retired service members were recognized.

DMS teacher shares vision for ag station

Evan Cummings, a science teacher at Delta Middle School, also sees the potential for students to gain hands-on experience in many aspects of science at the Rogers Mesa Research Station.

"In 2005, when our family moved to Delta County, one of the first things I did was contact Dr. Ron Godin at the Rogers Mesa Research Station," Cummings said.

College may be five years away for James Goff, but he's already secured his first scholarship of $1,000.

Goff, an eighth grader at Delta Middle School, is a recipient of the Alan D. Laff scholarship, awarded to a student leader in the 9Health Fair in the Classroom fair.

Delta Middle School puts out a helping hand

Using about nine bucks worth of materials, technology students at Delta Middle School tapped into the potential of 3D printing to produce a prosthetic hand for a fellow classmate.

"We've only had this 3D printer for about a month, but the kids are already doing amazing things with it," said their teacher, James Hughes.

The weekend of Feb. 26-27, Hotchkiss K-8 School hosted the Delta County seventh-eighth grade girls' basketball tournament. All Delta County girls did an excellent job of showing pride for their respective schools as well as for the game of basketball.

Math Counts is a competitive math event for sixth-eighth grade students that includes both team and individual competitions. The Math Counts competition took place in Delta Dec. 10 at the Delta Performing Arts Center.

Grant sought for DMS construction

An architect is putting the finishing touches on a design for a Delta Middle School project that will enhance student safety and address the aging infrastructure of the sixth grade wing.

School board members reviewed preliminary designs with 50J maintenance supervisor John McHugh at a Jan. 15 work session.

Members of Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary #3571 of Delta recognized the top middle school and high school essayists in the VFW's annual voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen writing contest.

DMS administrators anticipate a great year

Delta Middle School staff members are wearing pins in the shape of puzzle pieces -- a reminder from principal Jennifer Lohrberg that "every piece has a place and every piece belongs."

It's her way of saying that staff, students, parents and the community are all a piece of the "big picture" -- challenging the students at Delta Middle School to be the best they can be.
