For public safety, and to prevent further damage, two homestead cabins in Escalante Canyon have been closed until June 2018.

The Walker Homestead and Captain Smith's Cabin, along with a historic water wheel, are listed on Colorado's Most Endangered Places List (2013) by Colorado Preservation Inc. Efforts are underway to secure funding for restoration and interpretation of the structures, which represent the pioneer spirit of Escalante Canyon.

Delta County seventh graders traded their traditional classrooms for an outdoor learning environment this week in BLM's Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area. Hundreds of students from Paonia, Hotchkiss, Cedaredge and Delta enjoyed hands-on learning along Escalante Canyon.

Safe speed limits sought for Escalante Canyon Road

Several people concerned about speeding vehicles on Escalante Canyon Road met Aug. 1 at the Delta County Courthouse to discuss the traffic situations that make it necessary to establish and post speed limits.

Kent Davis, representing Escalante Ranch, noted that between the Capt. Smith cabin and the highway a lot of the land is being farmed.
