Poliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours.
The North Fork Valley Rotary Club will host its annual Casino Night from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Shade-Scapes, 122 E. Bridge Street in Hotchkiss. The event will include poker, blackjack, prizes, a silent auction and lots of fun.
In honor of World Polio Day, which is widely recognized on Oct. 24, the Rotary Club of the North Fork Valley will give an update on Rotary's 27-year mission to eradicate the crippling childhood disease at the weekly lunch meeting at noon Thursday, Oct. 27, at Paonia Town Hall.
It has been said that "leadership cannot be taught, but it must be learned."
Two outstanding Paonia High School students were given a unique opportunity last summer to experience what that means.
The North Fork of the Gunnison River was crawling at 19 cfs Saturday for the first ever North Fork Rotary Club Ducky Derby fundraiser. The first, second- and third-place ducks, which floated downstream on their sides, took about 10 minutes to cross the finish line roughly 100 feet downstream of the Paonia River Park.
Paonia resident Steve Simpson will soon be one of a handful of North Fork Ambulance crew members to be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician-Intermediate.
Simpson originally joined NFA in 1995, then later worked full time for the Delta County Ambulance District (DCAD) before going to work at the coal mines.
For more than five decades, Don Foster has helped keep the wheel of the North Fork Rotary Club turning. He has shaken countless hands, attended more than 2,500 meetings both here and abroad, helped raise money for scholarships, non-profits and other notable causes, dropped many a dollar in the donations can and sung a lot of silly songs.
In late summer, the Delta Rotary Club welcomed Lindsay Roberts as its newly elected president. Officers for the 2015-16 term include Morgan Yost, past president; Jim Wetzel, treasurer; and Jody Jorns, secretary. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7 a.m. at Daveto's in Delta.
