On the first morning of 2018, 50 area residents (and five dogs) hiked three miles around Sweitzer Lake State Park near Delta. It was the largest group ever to turn out for the activity.
When Scott Rist learned that 50 percent of the kids in Delta County don't own a bicycle he decided to take action.
Rist, a senior park ranger for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, applied for a grant from the Colorado Parks Foundation to buy bicycles for Sweitzer Lake State Park which is located just south of the town of Delta.
On April 21, 45 Youth Outdoor Network students celebrated Earth Day and the end of a successful first year at Sweitzer Lake State Park.
Students from the five participating high schools -- Paonia, Delta, Olathe, Cedaredge, and Hotchkiss high schools -- learned survival skills from Anita Evans, director of the Nature Connection. Armed with flint and cottonballs and faced with a ceaseless wind, students raced to build a fire the fastest.
