Local Teachers of the Year place second in state VFW contest

Three Delta County teachers who were honored by VFW Post and Auxiliary #3571 were also recognized at the state level.

On Loyalty Day, May 1, the post recognized Sharon Lee, Teacher of the Year at Lincoln Elementary School; David Piotrowski of Vision Charter Academy as Teacher of the Year on the middle school level; and Kelly Johnson, Teacher of the Year from Delta High School.

Teachers, principals get high marks

Performance reports for Colorado teachers and principals released to the public for the first time show the majority of educators in Delta County received evaluation ratings of "effective" or higher.

A total of 88 percent of Colorado teachers and 98 percent in Delta County -- received an overall rating of "effective" or "highly effective" according to the metrics released by the Colorado Department of Education.

Vision Charter Academy welcomes new teaching staff

Learners enrolled at Vision Charter Academy (VCA) headed back to school on Aug. 31, where some new faces greeted them in the classroom. VCA, with campuses in Delta, Cedaredge and Paonia, serving the needs of K-12 learners in Delta, Montrose, Mesa and Gunnison counties, is excited to welcome several new teachers to its innovative and caring staff.

VFW post honors teachers

On April 4, four local teachers were honored with "Teacher of the Year" awards by members of Delta's Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary #3571.

The four teachers attended a banquet in their honor as they received the VFW's National Citizenship Education Recognition Award for their schools.

Arch Coal Foundation awards teaching grants

Nine Delta County teachers have been named recipients of innovative teaching grants by the Arch Coal Foundation, according to Jim Miller, general manager of Mountain Coal Company's West Elk mine. This is the ninth year that the Arch Coal Foundation has set aside $10,000 to award grants to support teaching excellence in Delta County.
