Federal lands management agencies have been planning a prescribed burn on public lands on the Uncompahgre Plateau that was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, June 27.
Jeff Wright, Delta County emergency manager, reported to the Board of County Commissioners on Monday that smoke from the burn will impact Delta County. Delta Dispatch and first responder agencies are expected to receive many calls about the controlled burn project.
The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests will close a section of the 47 Trail located on the south end of the Uncompahgre Plateau due to logging operations in the area. Approximately 2 miles of the trail located off the Divide Road (NFS 402) and north to the Lockhart Road (NFSR 507) will be closed while the project continues.
The Bureau of Land Management has released a plan guiding management in the 210,000-acre Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area, including the Dominguez Canyon Wilderness. Congress, based on broad local support, designated these public lands as a National Conservation Area in 2009 for their unique geologic, cultural and ecological resources in the spectacular canyon country of the Uncompahgre Plateau.
