The steadiest playing team in 3A District 5 softball play in 2017 has been Meeker's Cowboys, which just happen to be the league's top team with a 7-1 league record and 12-3 overall. Delta, the league's fourth-place team at 3-2 and 6-6, traveled to Meeker for doubleheader action last week.

After playing in Gunnison on Tuesday, Sept. 19, Cedaredge Bruins' softball team raced past the Cowboys, 21-8, and now rests in second place in the 3A WSL District 5 race.

Cedaredge (4-1, 4-7 overall) broke a 7-7 tie in the sixth inning with a 14-run barrage to propel the Bruins to a 21-8 decision over Gunnison (2-3, 2-11).

NFPPR survey to help guide GOCO grant app.

The North Fork Pool, Parks & Recreation District has partnered with Hotchkiss Home Plate Baseball Association to build a baseball and softball complex to the North Fork Pool on Bulldog Street. They are currently working on a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant application to fund the project.

After many years, the North Fork Pool, Park and Recreation District is moving forward on its next phase to bring more recreational opportunities to the valley, this time in the form of new baseball and softball fields.

"We have partnered with Hotchkiss Home Plate to continue our master plan of building baseball fields at the Crossroads property," said Lenore Cambria, the district administrator of the NFPPRD.

Even though Delta's Panthers lost their softball game against Basalt, 6-5, the Panthers own an 11-8 overall record after defeating Aspen in doubleheader action 20-0 and 19-0 this past week.

Delta is third in 3A District 5 standings behind Basalt (11-1 and 15-4) and Cedaredge (10-2 and 14-5) with the regular season play completed. All three teams are headed to post-season play.

A six-run first inning more than set the tone for the rest of the game as Cedaredge rambled past Gunnison's Cowboys by a score of 12-2 in prep softball action during Homecoming week.

The Bruins, 6-1 and 9-4, jumped on Gunnison, 2-4 and 2-11, for six runs and added another four-spot in the third frame for a 10-0 lead heading to the fourth inning.

Cedaredge battled past the Cowboys, 15-10, on Sept. 13 and powered its way past first-time league foe Delta, on Sept. 15, 13-3, to record two important wins in the 3A WSL race. Unfortunately, a late inning run spelled defeat (6-5) in Rifle.

The Cedaredge Bruins faced a brutal softball schedule this past week, beginning on Tuesday with a doubleheader in Basalt, a game in Aspen and then a weekend tournament in Berthoud in which the Bruins played four more games making it a total of seven contests in just three days.

The good news is the Bruins won four of the seven games bringing their season record to 6-3.

The Cedaredge Bruins upped their softball league mark to 5-0 over the past week with a non-conference win over Palisade and a 3A District 5 decision over Meeker.

Against Palisade the Bruins avenged a loss to the Bulldogs, 8-4, on Sept. 18 in tournament play in the Delta Invitational Tournament. The rematch on Sept. 22 was an 8-5 win for Cedaredge.

Delta played once last week and that contest was against Rifle's Bears in Rifle. Delta improved to 4-0 in league play and 12-4 overall after shutting out the Bears, 19-0.

The Panthers wasted little time after jumping to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. Delta's bats exploded in the second frame for 11 runs that left little doubt as to the game's outcome.

Last weekend the Bruins split a pair of games. On Sept. 5 Cedaredge took on Class 3A Faith Christian in Gunnison with the Eagles defeating Cedaredge 15-13.
