There's no denying Hotchkiss and Paonia are rivals, but the Bulldogs will have to wait another season to attempt a win over the Eagles after playing to a 3-0, 25-21, 25-7, 25-18 home loss last Friday.

Paonia, Cedaredge go five sets in tourney, Bruins win, claim title

Volleyball rivals Paonia and Cedaredge met in the finals of the 2A District 5 Tournament last Saturday, and just like the regular season matches between the Eagles and Bruins, fans at neutral Grand Valley High School were treated to an outstanding match that needed extra points to decide the victor.

In a fiercely competitive match, Cedaredge (19-4) won the five-set nailbiter 25-20, 25-23, 18-25, 13-25, 18-16.

For Hotchkiss senior Gratia Fisher, singing The Star-Spangled Banner ahead of Saturday's varsity volleyball game against Meeker was a little more challenging than most of her past performances. Not only was it the final game of the regular volleyball season, and possibly her final home game as a volleyball player, Fisher and her teammates had just distributed 50 light pink long-stemmed roses to people in the stands whose lives have been affected by cancer as part of the team's Dig Deep, Dig Pink volleyball breast cancer benefit.

The old Hotchkiss versus Paonia rivalry was rekindled in high school volleyball last Tuesday night in a match in Paonia's gym.

While the veteran Eagles showed they are still the top team in the region, Hotchkiss demonstrated solid teamwork, a strong team attitude and proved that the young Bulldogs are getting better every match.
