Leon Grant

Merlin L. "Leon" Grant died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017, at HopeWest in Grand Junction.

Visitation will be Thursday, Feb. 23, at Taylor Funeral Chapel in Hotchkiss from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be Friday, Feb. 24, at 10 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Chapel in Delta. Interment will follow at Mesa View Cemetery.

Mr. Grant was born May 17, 1925, to Charles and Meryl (Buffehr) Grant on Gore Creek. He was raised by his grandparents, Jake and Lydia Buffehr.

Mr. Grant served in the Army during World War II from September 1943 through February 1946. He served at the 156th General Hospital near Hereford, England, for one year.

After the war, he came home, earned his GED and married Ardith Williams on Aug. 31, 1947.

He worked in construction for most of his life. He worked at a sawmill and on the ski area that later became Vail. He also worked for Vail Water and Sanitation before taking a janitorial job in the Fruita and Loma schools.

In 1982, he and his wife bought a dairy farm near Lazear. After 10 years, they moved to Hotchkiss to be near family.

Mr. Grant was a life member of VFW Post #9333 and a member of the Ostomy Support Group for a number of years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing games with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ardith; daughters, Regina (Floyd) Bufkin of Sun City, Ariz., Pat Grant of Hotchkiss, Pamela (Larry) Snodgrass of Clifton; and son-in-law, Terry Ragsdale of Fruita; 30 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry and Terry; and daughter, Barbara Ragsdale.
