In Paonia, a small family farm is adding onto its educational programs in an exciting way. With the growing interest in agri-tourism, the Living Farm has created the Interactive Farm Tour. This self-guided tour allows for anyone to explore a working farm in a unique hands-on experience.
"Our agri-tourism programs are a part of my family farm's mission to help others enjoy a slower, more sustainable way of life. Everyone should have the chance to understand where good food comes from!" Lynn Gillespie, owner of the Living Farm, shared about their interactive tour program.
The self-guided interactive tour takes the "parade route" through the heart of the Living Farm. During the tour, meet and greet with the farm animals and take the time to explore growing methods. The greenhouses and gardens are always flourishing during tour season and are wonderful to explore. The chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, cows, goats and sheep are all available to be held and petted in the tour's petting zoo experience.
The tour explores behind the scenes of a sustainable farm "ecosystem." The farm is known for its unique growing systems that boost productivity of the gardens and nutrient density of the produce year-round. Their online gardening course can be seen in person by visiting their patented Abundance Garden demonstration gardens. This unique growing system modeled after the farm has been found to outperform the average U.S. garden by 10 times, producing a whopping five pounds per one square foot of garden.
This innovative agri-tourism experience has its grand opening May 6, and continues through Oct. 30. Tickets are $6 per person and children 3 and under are free. The new farm store also allows visitors to continue their agri-tourism experience by bringing home a piece of the farm. Visitors choose between a wide variety of local farm products such as gardening education, sheep wool stuffed pillows and so much more.
The Living Farm also offers guided farm tours to large groups, which can be booked at http://thelivingfarm.org/.
The Paonia area has so many local adventures to offer. Surrounding this agri-tourism experience are incredible mountain biking trails, great farm-to-table food, fishing, herry festivals and so much more.
Experience a working farm like never before this summer; visit the Living Farm to get started.
