Local volunteers give Father's Day a boost

Every year since 1998, Families Plus, a local nonprofit that works with at-risk children, has ensured that each child enrolled in their program receives a Father's Day gift to give to his/her father and male mentor. For the last several Father's Days, the gift has been cookies and a Frisbee, or ball, or some other item that can be used for the child and father/mentor to spend fun time together.

It may seem odd to some, but the children and families involved with Families Plus often struggle with poverty and other difficult challenges that put the child at-risk for failure as adults. The experience of giving a gift to a loved one has a strong positive effect on these children, while helping to create a lasting personal bond.

This affirmative gesture could not be made possible without numerous local volunteers. A special thank you goes out to the Delta United Methodist and Cedaredge United Methodist Churches whose members graciously baked and/or involved numerous children in the actual baking and wrapping of the cookies/balls. Family Plus also wants to thank the many individual volunteers who had a hand in seeing that our children had these gifts to give.
