Lily Lockhart's track and field season is off to a good start. At Saturday's Delta Panther Invitational Lockhart handily won the shot put and discus.
Lockhart is the returning Class 4A state champion in the shot put and silver medalist in the discus. She signed to compete in track and field at Dartmouth. Saturday's marks were well below her state-placing distances, but Lockhart said that's normal for the first meet of the season. She actually had her best first meet showing ever. "It's hard, because people expect you to start off where you ended last year," said Lockhart, who won the discus by more than 22 feet with a throw of 128-09. And while she's a state champion in the shot, "I like discus better," said Lockhart.
She was also throwing Saturday against Katie Hyke, last year's 2A state champion from Cedaredge, who placed third in both events. Lockhart said Hyke was her main competition all last season and will be again this season, up until league and state competition.
Lockhart said that while she's excited to compete in 3A, she also knows that she will face strong competition at state from Eaton's Tarynn Sieg, the defending champion in both events.
The Panther girls scored 66.5 points Saturday to place fourth out of 11 teams.
Sophomore Reagan Clay placed eighth in the shot put with a personal best throw of 30-9.5 inches, and set a personal best mark of 85-05 in the discus.
Freshman Kaley St. Peter had an impressive meet, placing second in the 100 hurdles, fifth in the 200m, and third in the long jump.
Sophomore Beki Atchley placed fourth in the 3200m, and Chancelynn Urquhart placed fifth. In the 4X800 relay, Sara Geddes, Amelia Lousignont, Shianne Valdez and Kaitlynn Neely placed fourth while Urquahart, Atchley, Hana Hollenbeck and Jaspe Arias posted the fifth-best time.
Delta's roster includes six seniors, six juniors, nine sophomores and three freshmen. Senior Emily Baier is a returning state qualifier in the long jump, where she placed fourth Saturday.
With Hotchkiss' track undergoing repair renovation, Delta High School will host the Hotchkiss Invitational Track Meet this Saturday.
