Lois Smith

Lois Frances Cunningham died July 24, 2016. She was 94.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 29, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Hotchkiss. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss.

Lois Frances Cunningham was born in San Marcos, Texas, March 25, 1922, to William and Lillie (Walden) Cunningham. After Lois's mother died in 1924, when she was just 2, she was cared for by relatives in Austin, Texas. Her father married Lillie Belle Mauk when Lois was 5, and the family moved to Littlefield, Texas, in 1930.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Littlefield High School in 1940. After graduation she moved to California and worked at the Consolidated aircraft factory in San Diego.

She married Don Smith on March 8, 1946, in San Diego.

In 1950 they moved to Nebraska to Ranch. They moved to Littlefield, Texas, and then to Hotchkiss in 1954. They farmed on Rogers Mesa and Lois cooked for the Hotchkiss schools for 20 years.

They sold their farm in 1999 and moved to Austin. In 2013, the Smiths moved into Crossroads Assisted Living.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Don of Delta; sisters, Edith Cunningham of Irvine, Calif., Virginia Harris of Delta, Naomi Chavez of Belen, N.M., and Patsy (Calvin) Campbell of Anadarko, Okla.; twin sons, Bill (Donna) of Calgary, Alberta and Don II (Linda) of Central Point, Ore.; grandchildren, Pam (Damon) Struckmeyer of Holyoke, Pete (Michelle) Nelson of Austin, Texas, Andrew (Janet) Smith of Des Moines, Iowa, Eric (Cherine) Smith of Draper, Utah, Lt. Cdr. Matt (Carolbeth) Smith, USN, of Memphis, Tenn., and Jessica (Neil) Morrison of Toronto, Ontario; eight great-grandchildren; and extended family.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, W.H. Cunningham III and Luther Cunningham; sisters, Ruth Culp and Cora Nell Swayzee; a grandson, LeRoy Smith; and great-grandson, Westyn Struckmeyer.
