Longtime Delta County resident Loretta Herd died Feb. 8, 2017, at HopeWest in Grand Junction. She was 84.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Delta City Cemetery.
Mrs. Herd was born Sept. 20, 1932, in Delaware County, Okla., to Dave and Souvina Israel Sisson. Her mother was a full-blooded Cherokee.
The family moved to Colorado when she was small and settled in the Hotchkiss area. She married Leck Herd on April 17, 1953. They moved to Delta in 1961.
Mrs. Herd was the first woman school bus driver, first woman on the Delta Police Department and first woman sextant on the Delta Cemetery.
She is survived by her sons, Leftrick of Green Valley, Ariz., and Bailey (Sandra) of Clifton; brother, Curt of Delta; sisters, Marylee of San Jose, Calif., and Nina Mae of Kennewick, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leck; her brother, Otis; sister, Margie; and great-grandson, Aiden.
