Longtime Paonia resident Lotis Smith died at her home Monday, Feb. 22, 2016. She was 91.
Memorial services were held Friday, Feb. 26, at Bible Center Church in Paonia.
Mrs. Smith was born in Cleveland, Okla., March 17, 1924, to Fred and Vera (Brown) Smith. She grew up in Amarillo, Texas, where she graduated from high school.
She married Billie Joe Smith June 4, 1944, in Hereford, Texas. They lived in Silverton before moving to Paonia in 1958. They owned and operated East Side Grocery in Paonia for several years.
Mrs. Smith was a member of Rebekahs and enjoyed crocheting and arts and crafts.
She is survived by her sons, Billy Dean (Judy) Smith of Cedaredge, James (Windy) Smith of Surprise, Ariz., and Mike (Tammi) Smith of Paonia; her daughter, Rhonda (Richard) Kinser of Paonia; her brother, Earl Smith of Texas; her sisters, Wanda Perkins, Lorene Newman and Christine Gregarious, all of Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Billie Joe Smith on Dec. 30, 1992; her sister, Edith Smith; her brother, Jack Smith; and a great-granddaughter, Sara Crosby.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Bible Center Church in Paonia.
