There was plenty of wrestling action for those who followed their favorite teams this past weekend. Cedaredge and Paonia attended the 12-team Indian Invitational.
Delta was in Utah at the annual Tournament of Champions wrestling tournament hosted by Uintah in Vernal, Utah.
Bulldog fans followed the success of Hotchkiss at the 19-team field of the Eagle Valley Invitational as the Bulldogs won that tournament with 194 points. More details of the match may be found elsewhere in today's sports section.
Cedaredge finished the tournament with one champion, Mario Madaleno, at 285 pounds. The Bruins finished fourth as a team, with Olathe placing second and Paonia third. Paonia results may be found in a related story.
Hotchkiss' wrestling team claimed three individual titles and had six other grapplers who made their way into title matches and placed second (see related story in today's paper).
The 28-team Tournament of Champions wrestling tournament draws teams from several surrounding states and is considered to be a highly touted event that showcases outstanding talent in the sport of prep wrestling.
Delta High School had six wrestlers advance to the semifinal round and finished fifth with 137 points. Meeker scored 133 points to place eighth and Fruita had 123 points to finish ninth.
The Panthers' Luke Anderson had Delta's highest finish with a second place at 106. Delta's Kory Mills (170) and Logan Church (285) placed third, while Kole Roberts (145) and Stephen Davignon (160) finished fourth.
Cedaredge's wrestling team will take the mat next on Thursday, Jan. 14, when it hosts Coal Ridge and Gunnison in triangular action beginning at 4 p.m.
The Bruins then travel to Salida for a Saturday dual.
Delta is slated to be in action again on Friday and Saturday in Alamosa for tournament competition.
Delta's second annual "Kickoff to Christmas" takes place Saturday, Nov. 25. This event is sponsored by the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce and First Colorado National Bank.
