Mary Ruth Gunderson

On Sept. 22, 2016, Mary Ruth Gunderson died of natural causes at the age of 89 in Clarkston, Wash.
Mary Ruth McClung was born on March 16, 1927, in Elkhart, Kan., to John Ewell and Flora Lamkin McClung. Mary was one of six children born to the McClung family.
In 1937 the McClung family moved to Paonia, Colo., where her father owned and operated McClung's Clothing Store for many years. Mary graduated from Paonia High School, class of 1945.
In 1945 Mary enrolled in the University of Denver and graduated in 1949 with a degree in Sociology. In 1949 she began work with the county welfare department in Delta, Colo.
On Aug. 3, 1951, Miss McClung was married to Jackson Sidney Hamilton in Grand Junction, Colo., and to this union was born one son William Steven. On Dec. 3, 1959, Jack Hamilton was killed in a heavy equipment accident while working on the Paonia Dam project in western Colorado. Mary continued to work at the welfare department until 1961.
On March 29, 1961, Mary was wed to Leroy Clifford Gunderson in Paonia, Colo., and to this union one daughter was born, Anne Kristine.
In the late 1960s Mary and Roy relocated to Missoula, Mont., where she resided until 2012. Mary was preceded in death by her husband Roy on May 18, 2003 as well as her parents, one sister and one brother, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
Three sisters, son, daughter, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews survive Mrs. Gunderson. A private family service will follow at a later date in Missoula, Mont.
