Municipal election petitions due early

By Tamie Meck

Citizens interested in running for election in 2016 take note: Changes have been made in the timeline for submitting petitions.

Petitions for individuals seeking a seat on the Paonia board of trustees or Hotchkiss and Crawford councils can be picked up at respective town offices on Jan. 5, and must be completed and submitted to the respective town hall no later than Jan. 25.

In the past, petitions have gone out in February, said Hotchkiss town clerk Marlene Searle at the Dec. 10 council meeting. The change gives towns more time to prepare for elections, which will be held April 5, said Searle.

Four-year terms being served by Hotchkiss trustees Dustyn Foster, Carrie Wingfield and James Roberts are expiring. A two-year seat held by trustee Larry Jakubiak, who was appointed, is also ending. All sitting trustees are eligible for re-election.

In Crawford, seats held by Gill Saunders, Wanda Gofforth, Hetty Todd and mayor Susie Steckel are up for grabs in 2016. Steckel announced at the Dec. 10 meeting that she will not seek re-election for mayor.

In Paonia, terms ending in April 2016 include Ross King, Amber Kleinman, Eric Goold and mayor Neal Schwie-

terman, who is prohibited by term limits from seeking re-election.
