Delta High School hosted last week's Delta Invitational Cross Country Meet at Confluence Park.
Grand Junction High School won both the boys' and girls' division team titles with 72 and 59 points respectively. Delta's Panthers placed eighth in the boys' division with 193 points while senior Mykayla Music led the girls to an eighth place finish as well. Music placed third in individual honors with her time of 20:10.39.
Montrose's Ian Meek blistered the Confluence course with a time of 15:54.82 to claim the individual boys' title last Friday. There were 96 competitors in the race.
Delta's Panthers had three runners place in the top 50, with senior Wade Stinson crossing the finish line 30th to lead Delta's team. Stinson finished with a time of 18:05.73. Stinson juggles time with the cross country team and is a starter on the all-county soccer team hosted by Delta High School.
Stinson noted he enjoys both sports and is having fun playing both. His practice schedule can be conflicting however. "I go to soccer practice every day and then I have independent cross country practice schedules. Coach Lopez has schedules for me."
Freshman John Ames continued his top-40 finishes with a time of 18:11.16 to place 34th. Junior Elias Carson was the third top-50 placer with a time of 19:16.88 and finished 49th.
Other Delta runners included sophomore Logan Freed, 55th, junior David Husmann, 56th, and Aaron Lohrberg, a sophomore who finished 59th.
Hotchkiss senior Mae Anderson was Delta County's top runner last week as she crossed the finish line in second place with a time of 20:07.38. Telluride's Soleil Gaylord was the individual titlest with a time of 19:31.69.
Music started the race near the front of a field of 78 runners, but felt she did not run a good race. "I started slow, and if I start the first half slow, it seems my second half is also slow." Results are positive proof that Music is running well so far this season.
Freshman Beki Atchley had another good race for Delta as she placed 40th in a time of 22:53.27. Senior Abbi Beckwith ran the race in a time of 23:20.86 and Anha Richards, a sophomore, recorded a time of 23:31.61 to place 49th for the Panthers.
Delta is scheduled to take part in their next competition at Canyon View Park in Grand Junction this Saturday, Sept. 12, at 9 a.m.
