Montrose resident Walburga Smith died unexpectedly of a heart attack Tuesday, June 10, 2014. She was 78.
She was born in Darmstadt, Germany, Jan. 11, 1936, to Heinrich and Eva Rockel.
She married Johannes Hechler in Germany in 1955.
He was killed in a vehicular accident in 1958. She immigrated to the United States with their son, Rolf, in 1964.
On June 22, 1971, she married Ross Smith. After retirement, they moved to Truth or Consequences, N.M. In 2005 they moved to Montrose where they built their home.
She worked for Delta Cleaners, City Market and Russell Stover Candies for many years.
Mrs. Smith enjoyed spending time with her family, knitting and gardening.
She is survived by her children, Rolf (Kelli) Hechler of Truth or Consequences, N.M., Dale (Sherilyn) Smith of Durango, Linda Chapin and Terry (Stasia) Smith, all of Montrose, and Diane (Dennis) Sitton of Hotchkiss; 16 grandchildren, OJ, Erik, Rhonda, Jim, Desiree, Sheena, Jeff, Michael, Kevin, Shannon, Sarah, Luana, Robert, Dennis, Elisha and Christina; 31 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; three siblings, Manfred (Gisela), Volker (Marianna) and Ute (Holger), all of Germany; and numerous nephews and nieces in both the United States and Germany.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Smith, on May 26, 2014.
At her request, no funeral service is planned. A private gathering will be held at a future date.
