Information is being sought on a milky white chemical substance that was illegally dumped in a private pond on Samuel Wade Road near Paonia. Ken Nordstrom, environmental health director for Delta County, said the substance appears to be some sort of acrylic polymer, but testing has not been completed.

He has been in contact with the attorney general’s environmental crimes division, which will pay for analysis. The pond is filled by an irrigation ditch which then flows into the North Fork of the Gunnison. Nordstrom says he does not believe much, if any, of the substance spilled into the river.
The substance was reported July 4. After an initial investigation by sheriff’s deputies and Paonia firefighters, the health department and the hazardous materials team from the Hotchkiss Fire District were brought in. During the course of investigation, sheriff’s deputies learned that a neighbor had returned home to find his dog locked inside the bathroom of his home. A site off Price Road has been identified as the likely dump site.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Delta County Sheriff’s Office at 874-2000 or Crimestoppers at 874-8810.
