A group of 24 runners from the North Fork area, Cedaredge, DeBeque, Grand Junction, Craig, Fort Collins and Nebraska teamed up to run Ragnar Colorado 2014.
Calling themselves NCIS Colorado (Near Collapse In Snowmass), the all-women team completed the 194-mile, 36-leg relay from Copper Mountain Resort to Snowmass in roughly 35.5 hours.
This year’s relay consisted of 163 teams. Relay legs vary in length from about 2 to 10 miles, and in difficulty from easy to very hard, beginning with a very hard 9-mile leg.
Team members run, sleep, drive and repeat until the race is complete, traveling by support van.
In 2013, runners from Delta County and the Colorado River Valley competed in their first relay.
Team captain Kelly Rienks, along with Dawn Plymale, Jordyn Rienks, Kori Satterfield, Deb Carlson, Amy Largent, Tara Cox, Stacy Griffin, Kim Schultz and Stephanie Hanson are all returning runners from Ragnar Colorado 2013.
Eight runners are 2014 double medalists. Jordyn and Kelly Rienks, Britany Miller, Hanson, Schultz, Karla Moxley, Plymale and Largent also competed in the 120-mile Ragnar Trail Snowmass on June 5-6.
While the race is often exhausting and painful, Rienks said she is already starting to recruit runners for next year’s Ragnar Colorado 2015 competition.
