Heads up! Between 450 and 500 wrestlers, their coaches and families will descend on Paonia the weekend of June 14-15 for the fifth annual Paonia Summer Duals.
This year at least six states will be represented at the duals, and one team will come all the way from Las Vegas, according to event organizer and Paonia head coach Andy Pipher. Some of the best wrestlers from the region attend the highly competitive camp.
Affordability and location are among the reasons the duals have attracted the maximum number of wrestlers year after year, said Pipher. Teams and their families are allowed to camp on school grounds; many bring motor homes, and visitors take advantage of other activities such as fishing and hiking while here.
The public is invited to attend the duals. Matches start at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, and run through late afternoon.
The duals are limited to 32 teams and include incoming students between grades 7-12. Teams will be based on the 14 high school weights, with four additional weights (85, 90, 95 and 100 pounds) for the smaller wrestlers. A 2-pound allowance will be allowed for all 18 weight classes, with weigh-ins at 6 p.m. Friday, June 13.
