After several years of stability, administrative changes are on the horizon for Delta County Joint District #50 schools. Three principals and an assistant principal are either retiring or resigning at the end of the 2010-2011 school year. A second assistant principal will be transferring to another school. Helen Groome is retiring as principal of Crawford K-8 School. She has worked for the school district for 23 years and as principal of Crawford for four years. She also taught middle school math. Cedaredge Elementary School principal Wayne Frazier, who is retiring after 33 years, will be replaced by Amy Geddes, who is currently assistant principal of Garnet Mesa Elementary School. Paonia Junior-Senior High School principal Brent Curtice has been named assistant superintendent of Moffat County Schools. He has served as principal for 16 years. There will also be a new assistant principal/counselor in Paonia next year. Cindy Swartzendruber, a 26-year school district employee, is retiring. The school district is currently advertising for the GMES assistant principal, Paonia Junior-Senior High principal, and the PJSH assistant principal/counselor. District administration is considering whether to hire a part-time principal in Crawford or allocate some time from another school's principal and designate a lead teacher. Groome was a "teaching principal," meaning she divided her time between classroom and administrative duties. Next year Crawford will be a K-6 school. Seventh and eighth graders will have the option of traveling to either Paonia or Hotchkiss, although transportation will not be provided to Paonia.
