Old autos catch artists' eyes

Some may look at the vintage automobiles on Orval Proctor's Main Street lot and see a pile of rust; others see variations in color and shape that demand a paintbrush. That was the case with Buffalo Kaplinski and his longtime friend, Fred Honchell of Delta.

Kaplinski said he spotted the cars driving down Main Street. "I turned around and took a bunch of photos. I said to myself, 'I'm coming back here to paint.' He did just that about a week ago.

Kaplinski most frequently paints scenic landscapes, so the antique cars and trucks were a challenging departure. "I'm fascinated by these old vehicles," he said.

Kaplinski is a resident of Elizabeth but was on the Western Slope for an event at Plum Creek Winery in Grand Junction. The labels on many of Plum Creek's varietals feature Kaplinski's artwork, so the winery invited him to display his art at a major wine tasting event.

The next day he was in Delta with his watercolors and a painting buddy. Fred Honchell is a well-known artist who works out of the Gallery de la Luz at the corner of 1st and Palmer in Delta.
