Delta resident Omer Smith Jr. died Sunday, July 23, 2017, at his home. He was 64 years.

Omer Smith, Jr. was born Jan. 2, 1953 to Omer Smith, Sr. and Virginia Ann (Cude) Smith in Casa Grande, Ariz. He spent his childhood and attended school in Arizona.
Omer moved to the Western Slope 40 years ago where he met and married Sandy Dunnagan on Dec. 30, 1989, in Grand Junction. The couple would have celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary in December.
Mr. Smith enjoyed building his home, building rustic furniture, tile work, golfing, fishing, hunting and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy Smith; his mother, Ann Smith; two sons, Randy Doty and Jeff Doty; three daughters, Dawna Numbers, Cheryl Smith and Melissa Anderson; two sisters, Kay Black and Tammy Gonzales; nine grandchildren, Tyler, Makayla, Emily, Taryn, Rachel, Megan, Becca, Shelby and Nathaniel; and three great-grandchildren, Liam, Matthew, Easton and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his father and his sister, Pat Chatterton.

On Dec. 4 Delta County Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes denied the application of Paonia Holdings, LLC for a change of land use for the property at 41322 Highway 133, with an adjacent residence at 41402 Highway 133 and an ancillary property at 16180 Stevens Gulch Road.
The property is owned by Bowie Resources, LLC, and was formerly used as a coal load-out site.
