Panther hardwood teams win in Summit

A road trip to Frisco on a blustery winter day was made brighter after both the girls' and boys' varsity basketball teams earned victories in 4A WSL play. The girls led from start to finish and scored a 65-41 decision over the Tigers. Delta's boys took care of the ball down the stretch to hold off Summit for a 61-46 win in the evening's finale.
Both junior varsity squads lost preliminary games.
Delta 65, Summit 41
Big offensive nights by Lily Lockhart, Emily Nortnik and Dani Sakala paced Delta's Panthers to their fifth win of the season against six losses.
Nortnik got the Panthers rolling with seven points in the first period, igniting a 17-9 run.
Lockhart's 10 second-quarter points helped the Panthers extend their lead with a 20-8 surge and a halftime lead of 37-17.
Second-half scoring for the Panthers was a collective effort, as six different players accounted for 14 points in the third period. Five different players put another 14 points on the scoreboard in the fourth frame, outscoring the Tigers 28-24 for a winning score of 65-41.
Megan McDonnell scored 10 points for Summit in the first half and another seven in second-half play to lead all scorers with 17 points. Tiger teammate Autumn Ward netted nine of her 13 points in the fourth period for Summit.
Summit fell to 0-4 in league play and 4-6 overall. Delta is 2-4 and 5-6 overall.
The Panthers faced Palisade in Delta on Tuesday, looking to reverse the 51-12 loss at the hands of Palisade on Dec. 11 in Palisade.
Delta is on the road to Gypsum to face Eagle Valley on Friday, Jan. 22, with that game set to start at 6 p.m.
A Saturday contest against Glenwood Springs (1-2 and 2-7) will initiate the second time through league play. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
Delta 61, Summit 46
The cold and snowy trip to Frisco was not as concerning after the Panthers polished off Summit with a 61-46 4A WSL victory.
Senior Jonny Ponce was unstoppable in the first quarter as he scored eight of Delta's 14 points in the period. His tenacious drives to the rim resulted in a pair of field goals and eight free throws, making four, in the first eight minutes.
In all, Ponce was Delta's leading scorer in the game with 15 points, all coming in the first and fourth periods of the contest.
The Panthers held steady in the second quarter with another 14 points from the offense and just six points allowed by the defense.
Logan Freed came off the bench in the third quarter to spark the Panthers' offense with eight points and some nifty moves for good shots. The Panthers maintained their offensive advantage with a 16-14 run and a 44-33 lead going to the final stanza.
Ponce got back into the offensive flow during fourth-quarter play with seven more points, helping Delta outscore the Tigers by four points and stretching the final margin of victory to 15.
Dylan Hollenbeck and Kyle Mock finished with 11 points each, Jaspar Carmichael had nine points and Freed eight.
Delta's boys are in Gypsum for a 7:30 p.m. encounter with Eagle Valley on Friday, Jan. 22. Glenwood Springs comes to town on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. varsity boys' contest.
