Delta's Panthers were in Alamosa over the weekend to compete in the 13-team wrestling tournament hosted by the Mean Moose. Pueblo West won the tournament with 189.5 points, with highly touted 2A school Rocky Ford finishing second with 187 points. Mesa Ridge was third with its 171 points and host Alamosa placed fourth (154.5). Delta's Panthers were fifth after scoring 124 points.
Delta finished the tournament with one champion, Kory Mills, at 170 pounds. Sophomore Logan Church picked up a second-place finish in the 285-pound division.
The Panthers earned five top-five finishes from 106 to 160 pound classifications on their way to a fifth-place finish.
Mills, a senior at Delta High School, elevated his season record to 18-3 with the title match victory, a pin over Pueblo West's Ryan Stipe (11-9).
As a sophomore, Church is one of the top wrestlers in the 285-pound division and sports a 17-6 record following last week's competition in Alamosa. Junior Onyx Rowland (Mesa Ridge) carried a high win-loss record into the tournament and finished the weekend with a good 18-6 record.
Unfortunately for Church, and the Panthers, Onyx had the better score, 3-1, at the end of regulation time to win the 285-pound title.
At 106, Luke Anderson has been one of the top-seeded wrestlers all season long. An individual title was not to be for Anderson in Alamosa. Doherty sophomore Zack Szosiak (12-7) was able to outlast Anderson in the tournament's third-place bout and finished with a pin at the 2:44 mark of the match for the win.
The Panthers suffered a drought from 113 through the 132-pound matches and did not have any championship-round wrestlers.
Senior Shaun Staats (14-9) wrestled for third place at 138 and was pinned by Gateway's Jordan White (15-5) in the first period.
At 145, Kole Roberts (16-8) lost, 6-5, to Thunder Ridge's Alex Bezugly (12-7) in the third-place match.
Delta junior Chance Dillingham (9-5) faced Reis Martinez (15-5) of Alamosa in the third-place match at 152 pounds. Martinez found the right combination for a pinfall at 1:56 of the opening period to place third.
Stephen Davignon, Delta's 160-pounder, could not find the right moves to subdue Donovan Gonzales of Pueblo West and eventually lost by pinfall at the 2:50 mark. Davignon finished the weekend at 13-8 and Gonzales at 13-9.
The Panthers will host a triangular meet Thursday, Jan. 21. Eagle Valley and Rifle will join the Panthers on the mat, with action beginning at 6 p.m.
Delta is on the road Saturday for the Rifle Duals beginning early in the morning.
