Panthers hand Tigers twinbill league losses | Baseball, DHS

Delta's Panthers maintained their lead in 4A WSL play with a doubleheader win over Summit last Wednesday. Delta rolled to a 14-2 win in game one and cruised to a 12-2 decision in game two.

The Panthers own an 8-0 record in league play and are 10-3 overall with a handfull of games remaining in regular season play. Rifle, a team the Panthers play on Saturday, are 9-0 in league and 13-1 overall. The Bears are listed at the top of teams in state standings and Delta is listed 14th. The difference in schedules between the two teams reflects several lower division schools on Rifle's schedule. The two teams, Delta and Rifle, are slated to play a doubleheader on April 30 beginning at 11 a.m.

Game 1
Delta 14, Summit 2

The Panthers started with four runs in the first inning and added another five in the third for a 9-0 lead.

Summit scored its first run in the top of the fourth but was stunned by another five-run burst from the Panthers in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tigers closed the game's scoring with a single run in the fifth, giving Delta a 14-2 decision in five innings.

Delta outhit the Tigers 12-2 with Josh Reeder's four RBIs leading the way. Blake Reiher's three RBIs were next. Damon Jensen continued his hitting prowess with a 3-for-4 day that included two runs scored, a triple and two RBIs. Tristan Brown added two RBIs on a 2-4 day at the plate.

Summit had two hits, including a double by Andrew Shaw.

Drake Horn picked up his fourth win of the season for Delta with four innings of work, one hit and seven strikeouts.

Game 2
Delta 12, Summit 2

Delta started the game much the same way it had in game one, with five runs in the top of the first inning.

The Panthers tacked on two more runs in the second inning and led 7-1 going to the third frame.

Delta solidified its lead with four more runs in the third while its defense held the Tigers scoreless the next two innings.

Both teams scored singletons in the fifth inning to end the game after five innings by the 10-run rule, 12-2.

Ethan Keller was the winning pitcher for Delta.

Next up for the Panthers is a date with Palisade at Suplizio Field on Wednesday, April 27, at 4 p.m.

Delta is in Rifle on Saturday for doubleheader action (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) and is at home against Glenwood Springs May 3 for a 4 p.m. contest against the Demons, 3-6 and 5-8.
