Panthers handle Basalt on gridiron, 42-7; Palisade next

Delta's Panthers own a share of the lead in 2A Intermountain League play. Bayfield, Delta and Gunnison all sport records of 2-1 but have yet to play each other this season.
Last week's 42-7 rout of Basalt on Homecoming helped the Panthers gain a share of the league lead.
Senior Damon Jensen danced through and around the Longhorn's defense for 191 yards rushing and snagged a Kole Roberts' aerial for another 48 yards to finish the game with 239 yards of total offense.
Roberts finished the game with 10 of 13 passing for 290 yards and rushed for another 30 to finish the game with 320 yards of offense.
Jensen scored two touchdowns and Roberts scooted into the end zone from 10 yards out for a touchdown highlighting the non-conference contest that featured a running clock with 11:08 left in the game.
Jensen's first score came on a 10-yard run in the first quarter with 10:25 left in the period. A 55-yard meander through the Longhorn defense in the fourth quarter led to his second touchdown with 11:08 left in the game and initiated the running clock with Delta leading 42-0.
Tristan Brown also scored a pair of touchdowns for the Panthers with one coming in the first quarter on a 35-yard pass from Roberts with 6:03 left in the opening quarter. He finished the game with 72 yards and three catches.
Brown's second score came in the second quarter on a one-yard run capping a 70-yard drive with 3:17 left before halftime.
Senior Beau Byers scored Delta's third touchdown of the game in the second quarter on a 46-yard pass/run play. Byers finished the game as Delta's top receiver with five catches for 100 yards.
AB Ontiveros booted all six of Delta's extra points.
Basalt's Miles Levy scored on a quarterback plunge from one yard out to cap an 11-play drive covering 80 yards with 1:28 left in the game. Delta's defense was comprised of its second unit which played well to extend Basalt's drive to 11 plays. Pablo Rivera kicked the extra point to make the final score 42-7.
The Panthers had 519 yards of total offense while Basalt finished with 310 yards (128 rushing, 188 passing).
Delta plays at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction this Thursday, where it faces longtime nemesis Palisade beginning at 7 p.m.
