Panthers run past GV in hunt for soccer title

Delta's Panthers were never threatened in their soccer match against the 3A WSL ninth-place team Grand Valley. Delta's offense worked the ball methodically throughout the contest and scored five goals in the first half on its way to a 7-0 shutout.
The win moves Delta's record to 2-1 in league play and 6-2 overall. Coal Ridge is shown on top of the 3A WSL standings with its 1-0 and 7-0 records.
Marcos Edmondson was the first to score for the Panthers with Luis Meraz and Sergio Campos finding the net for goals as well. Freshman Martin Corral was the leading point producer with two goals in the first half of play.
Pedro Montes and Anders Schopp slipped shots past Grand Valley's keeper in the second half for a final score of 7-0.
Colton Godwin picked up a pair of assists while teammates Jose Pantoja, Campos, Montes and Brand Harper had an assist apiece.
Delta goal keeper Joseph Holiman picked up his sixth win against two losses and had one save in the contest.
The Panthers take on league leader Coal Ridge this Saturday at 11 a.m. on the Cottonwood field in North Delta. Basalt, the number four team (1-0 and 4-2) comes to town on Oct. 4 to play beginning at 4 p.m.
