Delta's Panthers began their soccer season the right way with a 6-0 win over visiting Cortez on Aug. 26. Delta's inability to put the ball in the net against Montrose on Aug. 29 cost it a 2-0 setback. An Aug. 31 contest in Delta with Coal Ridge was a big 4-1 win over one of the 3A WSL top teams. The Coal Ridge game did not count in league standings with the two teams meeting again on Sept. 28 for a league encounter in Carbondale.
The Panthers were more than ready to face Cortez on Aug. 26 and posted a 6-0 decision.
A visit to Montrose was less than a sharp display of Delta's abilities. According to Delta coach Elaine Wood, "We just couldn't put the ball in the net. We had some really easy shots that failed to reach the net.
"We had a goal in the first half that was called back. That wouldn't have mattered though as we scored Montrose's second goal on an inadvertant kick by a Delta player," stated Wood.
Delta had 21 shots in the game to just eight for the Indians. Martin Corral had six shots, Danny Mendoza had five and Marcos Edmondson and Bradley Davis had four apiece to pace Delta's offensive attack. Unfortunately, none of those shots reached the net.
Montrose senior Prajwol Chaudhary scored a goal for the Indians.
Delta 4, Coal Ridge 1
If Delta can duplicate last week's win over Coal Ridge on Sept. 28 the Panthers could be in contention for their second straight league title in as many years.
A slow start by the Panthers changed into a flurry of action where five goals were scored before the end of first half play.
Senior Danny Mendoza scored the game's first goal from the left side on a diagonal kick which glanced off the top rail of the goal and came to rest in the back-right corner.
Coal Ridge's Jordi Serna scored the Titan's lone goal on a kick from directly in front of the goal 10 to 15 yards out.
Delta's Corral was responsible for the next two goals, one from directly in front of goal and with the left foot slightly to the left of center in front of goal.
Ian Downey punched the final goal of the game off the top rail on a penalty kick.
The Panthers traveled to Grand Junction to play Palisade (0-2-0 and 0-3-0 overall 4A WSL) on the campus of Colorado Mesa University on Sept. 5. Results of that match up will appear in the Sept. 13 issue of the DCI.
Delta (2-1-0 overall) is in Carbondale on Sept. 9 to face Roaring Fork's Rams (2-0-0 overall) at 11 a.m.
Two fatal accidents occurred in Delta County within a two-day span last week.
Casey Gillenwater, 25, of Delta was killed the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 13, in a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 133 outside of Hotchkiss.
