More than 220 racers from 20 schools competed in the men's division at the Eagle Valley Cross Country invitational. Harley Ewert and Caden Meilner led the Paonia Eagles to finish in 18 minutes, 15.30 seconds and 18:15.8, earning 26 and 27 points, respectively. One of three Class 2A teams at the meet, Paonia entered 12 runners and placed eighth overall with 222 points, with Logan Green, Ethan Bartlett, Ben O'Rourke and Elijah Evans rounding out scoring.
More than 160 girls finished the course. Katya Schwieterman and Brooke Hillman led the Eagles, posting times of 22:35.80 and 22:47.2 to score 40 and 43 points respectively.
Alex Eaton's time of 23:09.9 was good for 52 points, and Jade Ellenberger (24:14.4), Jordan Evans (24:54.0) and Nora Dransfield (25:27.9) rounded out scoring for Paonia.
Paonia placed 11th out of 14 scoring teams, and second in Class 2A. The Classical Academy led the 2A teams in scoring, placing second with 68 points.
Paonia runs this Saturday at the annual Anna Banana Memorial Wildcat Invitational at Snooks Bottom in Fruita.
Since 2008 the Anna Banana race has been run in memory of Fruita Monument High School runner Anna Janowitz, who was killed in an automobile accident on her way to cross country practice.
Anna Banana is described as a relatively flat, true 3.1-mile cross country course offering asphalt, gravel, and single-track trail. Races begin at 10 a.m.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
