The first three quarters of Paonia High School's boys basketball game between the Eagles and Rangely essentially spelled the difference in last week's game. The Panthers were a five-point winner, 61-56, when the final buzzer sounded.
Rangely was two points better than the Eagles after one period and a 15-13 Panthers' edge in the second quarter gave Rangely a four-point, 25-21, halftime lead.
Another point was added to Rangely's lead in the third quarter on an 18-17 advantage for the Panthers. The final period was played evenly with each team scoring 18 points making the final score 61-56.
Paonia ended the season with a 9-3 league record and was 12-7 to finish fourth in the 2A District 5 standings.
The Eagles hosted a pigtail round on Monday and faced fifth seed Hotchkiss (8-4, 12-7). That winner moves on to play either 1 seed Rangely (11-1, 14-5), 8 seed Vail Mountain (5-7, 7-12) or 9 seed Soroco (1-11, 4-15) at 4:30 p.m. at De Beque High School. Losers of the pigtail games play in consolation semifinals at De Beque High School Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.
Consolation finals are set for Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. with a third-place game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Championship play is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
