In what could be its toughest match of the season, the Paonia volleyball team battled to a non-conference 3-2 win over Cedaredge Friday night. The game also marked the annual Pink Night fundraiser for HopeWest in recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The match was marked by long rallies, lots of digs, and many attacks by both sides that were answered with quick recoveries. Cedaredge took a 3-0 lead to start game one, and Paonia was never able to recover.
The Bruins scored the last three points of the set for a 25-16 win.
The second set was close from the start, with Paonia scoring four consecutive points to take an early, 6-3 lead. Junior Courtney Freeman dominated at the net, and gave the Bruins a 19-18 lead on a kill shot. Paonia came back to tie the game at 24-24. Cedaredge took a one-point lead, but the Eagles answered with three consecutive points for a 27-25 win.
The final three sets were close.
After a 25-23 third-set loss, Paonia came back to win set four, 25-21, and the fifth set, 15-11. Palmer led Paonia in kills with 18 and serve receives with 30.
On defense, Taralee Mautz had five solo blocks, 16 digs and 13 serve receives.
Cedaredge's night wasn't without celebration. In the JV match, the Bruins played to a 2-1 win over Paonia.
