The Paonia girls won three events and scored 88 points to finish second at the Hotchkiss Invitational. Montrose won the meet with 146 points.

At her first meet of the season, senior Sophia Anderson won two individual events. Anderson posted the only sub-13-second time in the 100-meter dash, winning the event with a time of 12.87 seconds.

In the triple jump where she placed fourth at state last year, Anderson posted a winning distance of 35 feet, 4.5 inches.

Also in the 100m dash, Brianna Van Vleet crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 13.24 seconds to place third. Van Vleet, the state 2A record holder in the long jump, didn't quite match her 2016 meet record distance of 17' 9.25", but did manage to clear 17' 7.25" for the win.

The Lady Eagles scored points in four of the five relays. Anderson, McKenna Palmer, Van Vleet and Lyla Hayutin-Baril pushed the meet record of 1:52.71 to win the 800m sprint medley relay with a time of 1:52.83.

Anderson, Van Vleet, Randi Rapke and Lyla Hayutin-Baril placed second in the 4x200 with a time of 1 minute, 49.85 seconds. (Montrose won the relay, re-setting the 2014 meet record by four-one hundredths of a second with a time of 1:48.00.) The 4x100 team of Alexandra Eaton, McKenna Hartigan, Emily Miller and Kassidy Rapke brought home silver with a time of 55.13.

In the 4x800 the team of Brooke Hillman, Carly Horn, Randi Rapke and Katya Schwieterman took fifth with a time of 11:27.05.

Also in individual events, in her first competition of the season, Mckenna Palmer, who placed third at state in the triple jump, won silver Saturday with a jump of 33' 2.75".

In the high jump Sadie Miller and Lyla Hauytin Baril both cleared 4' 6" to finish seventh and eighth, respectively, and in the 100 hurdles Palmer placed seventh.

Mckenna Hartigan finished seventh in the triple jump.

In the shot put, Sabrina Leighton won bronze with a throw of 33 feet even.

Paonia will compete this Saturday at the Cedaredge Invitational. Van Vleet set the meet record in the long jump last year with a jump of 17' 11.5".
