Paonia High School's track teams enjoyed plenty of success this past weekend, in spite of some of Mother Nature's intervention. A brief rainstorm, accompanied by a dose of lightning, suspended activities at the Frank Woodburn Invitational for a short time.
When the points were tallied at day's end, Paonia's girls were proclaimed team champions with 99 points. The Eagle's boys finished sixth, in the 18-team field, with 38 points.
Ashley Van Vleet and Chelsea Meilner, both seniors at Paonia High School, claimed first place in events to lead the Eagles' run to a team-title last weekend.
Van Vleet won the high jump with her season-best effort of 5-3 and Meilner's time of 12:53.01 in the 3200m run outdistanced the rest of the field. Van Vleet had a time of 51.49 in the 300m hurdles and placed third while Meilner ran a 5:45.82 1600m to place fourth.
Second-place finishes, for the Eagles, went to Brianna Van Vleet in long jump (17-07), Taylor Carsten in discus (112-9) and the Eagles' 400m relay team with a time of 51.02.
Junior Sophia Anderson's speed was enough for a third-place finish in the 200m dash as she posted a time of 26.88.
Other fourth-place finishes for the girls included McKenna Palmer in long jump and Carsten in shot put.
Nora Dransfield was fifth in the 3200m run and Emily Clawson was fifth in shot put.
Marisa Edmondson finished sixth in both the 100 and 200m dashes on Saturday with freshman teammate Alexandra Eaton finishing sixth in the 300m hurdles. Paonia's 1600m relay team was also sixth.
Randi Rapke was eighth in the 800m run.
The latest statistics on 2A leaders in track have several athletes listed from Delta County teams.
Brianna Van Vleet is currently the frontrunner in 400m dash competitors with her time of 60.74 in Class 2A. Ashley Van Vleet's leap of 5-3, accomplished this past weekend, is tied with Crowley County's Rylee Haynes for top honors in high jump.
For Paonia's boys, senior Jeramiah Hillman had favorable showings in both the 100 and 200m dashes with times of 11.62 and 23.74 to place third in each event.
Senior Cameron Van Vleet recorded a 40-07.25 leap in triple jump to place third, while the Eagles' 400m relay team posted a time of 45.47 for a third-place finish as well.
Austin Katzer was fifth in triple jump and sixth in the 110m high hurdles, with Taylor Walters placing sixth in long jump.
Seventh-place finishes went to Caden Meilner in the 3200m run and Warren Minerich in shot put.
Paonia's next track appearance is scheduled for this Saturday, April 16, in Glenwood Springs beginning at 10 a.m.
