Last weekend's basketball games scheduled for Paonia High School required little thought as to who would win its games. The Eagles' boys found the going easy and raced to a 77-31 victory. Paonia's girls were likewise on the winning side after a 76-25 win over the Cowboys.
With the win, Paonia's boys were confident they would be headed into this weekend's 2A District 5 tournament in De Beque. The top-seeded Eagles are 12-0 in league play and 18-1 overall. First-round foes for Paonia are either Meeker, 5-7 and 12-7, or Hayden, 0-12 and 0-16. Meeker and Hayden play on Feb. 22 to determine Paonia's opponent on Feb. 23 in Paonia.
Paonia's girls also have a date to play basketball on Feb. 23. Hotchkiss, 2-8 and 3-14, travels to Hayden to face the Tigers (2-8 and 5-12) in a knockout round for one team. The winner advances to play Paonia, in Paonia, on Tuesday for a berth in the semifinal round of district play in De Beque to be played Feb. 26.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
