Paonia's Eagles wrestled three duals and hosted their annual Screaming Eagle Tournament over the weekend.
Paonia's first dual was with Palisade on Thursday, Jan. 18 and were winners by a 42-30 score. On Friday Paonia played host to Bayfield and Custer County in dual action. The Eagles defeated Bayfield 48-24 and Custer County by a 60-12 margin.
The Eagles finished in a tie for third with Meeker with (186 points) in their Screaming Eagle Tournament (See related story on B5).
Paonia 42, Palisade 32
Thursday's match against Palisade began with the 160-pound match between the Bulldogs' Isaac Maestas and Paonia's Chris Lozano. Maestas won the bout by pin (1:17).
Paonia lost a decision, 10-3, at 170 pounds and forfeited at 182.
Jaden Miller's pin (1:14) over Gabe Correa in the 195-pound match stopped the losing streak at two.
At 220, Trevor Smith was a winner by major decision, 18-6, and Cyrus Malek' Madani pinned Ricardo Valenzuela in the 285-pound match giving the Eagles a 16-15 lead heading to the 106-pound class.
Jaggar Wade (106) and Raul Inchauregui (113) were winners by pinfall to lift Palisade to a 27-16 lead.
Gabe Ferguson (120), Eli Etter (126) and Grey Neal (132) won by pins and Sackett Chesnik scored a technical fall (17-1, 3:50) in the 138-pound match.
Austin Bernal's 3-2 decision over Clay Campbell in the 145-pound bout were the last points earned by Palisade.
Cyrus Baxter scored the matches' final points on a 6-3 decision at 152 pounds.
Paonia 48, Bayfield 24
The Eagles won nine of 15 matches on their way to a victory. Five of those wins were in the lower weights.
Zeb Etter (106) won by pin (1:06), Dillon Coe (113) won by forfeit, Ferguson (120) won 5-2, Grey Neal (132) won 10-4 and Chesnik pinned (1:09) Colby Joosten in the 138-pound match. Bayfield picked up wins at 126 (pin-3:39) and 145 by 7-2 decision.
Paonia won the first two upper weight matches with Baxter earning a pin at 152 and Jesse Burns also winning by pin at 160 pounds. The Wolverines gained a forfeit at 170 and scored a 6-2 decision in the 182-pound bout.
Smith's pin (0:36) at 195 made the score 42-18. Malek' Madani's forfeit win in the 220-pound class produced Paonia's last points of the match. A forfeit at 285 was Bayfield's last points of the match.
Eagles 60, Bobcats 12
Custer County scored pins in both the lower and upper weights against the Eagles. The opening weight, 113 pounds, was a pinfall win for the Bobcats but it would be their last until the 152-pound bout where Andrew Feldman scored a pin over Baxter.
Paonia had forfeit wins in three of the next five matches 120, 126 and 138.
Neal won by pin at 132 and Campbell scored a 0:17 pinfall in the 138-pound match.
Jesse Burns (160) and Miller (182) won by pin with the final 18 points for the Eagles coming at 195, 220 and 106.
There were two double forfeits (170 and 285) in the match.
