A visit to Delta on Thursday resulted in a 5-2 tennis victory for Paonia's Eagles. Paonia swept the singles competition and won two of four doubles matches in recording the decision.
Players survived the windy and cool conditions in an extended match-play lineup to accommodate many of the 37 players who make up Delta's tennis roster.
Paonia's talented 1S player, Jessie Holt, defeated Delta's Uyen Nguyen 6-2, 6-3 to start varsity action on the courts at Bill Heddles Recreation Center in Delta.
McKenna Erickson made it two in a row for the Eagles with her win over Perla Escarcega, 6-1, 6-1.
Kelsey Stroud eased past Delta's Mimi Baltazar, 6-2 and 6-2, in 3S action.
Delta blocked a sweep by the Eagles with a 1D win. Lizzy Ward and Cassidy Parker earned a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 victory over Paonia's Brandi Goddard and Kayla Carter.
Though not an easy win, Emily Wilczek and Haley Park combined to get past Delta's Meysa Mulford and Makayla Miramontes 6-2 and 6-3.
The Panthers' 3D team of Lupita Portillo and Elena Melgoza won their battle with Paonia's Bailee Campbell and Macy O'Rourke, 6-2 and 7-5.
In the final match of the varsity contest, Sierra Griffith and Ashley Ziemer handed the Eagles their fifth win by defeating Vianka Valdez and Marina Contreras, 6-4, 6-1.
Paonia coach Brian Benson noted there wasn't too much surprise in the way he thought the day would go. "I felt we probably would have the upper hand in the singles matches, though Uyen played Jessie really tough. The doubles matches were a different story, however. I figured they would probably be toss ups ... and they were. Delta's doubles teams are pretty solid, so I felt pretty good about our girls' efforts, and the fact we were able to split the four matches at doubles."
This week's tennis action had Cedaredge at Grand Junction on Monday and Paonia at Cedaredge on Tuesday.
Paonia plays at Grand Junction on Thursday (4 p.m.) while Cedaredge and Delta match up in Delta at 4 p.m. on Friday. The week concludes with Paonia hosting Fruita at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
