The Paonia boys scored 45 points to finish sixth out of 17 teams Saturday at the annual Hotchkiss Invitational track and field meet. The meet was held at Delta High School.
Paonia's throwers contributed 34 points to the team effort. In the discus, throwers Blake Benson, Warren Minerich and Cyrus Malek-Madani scored a combined 20 points. Benson won the event with a throw of 134 feet, 8 inches, Warren Minerich won silver with a throw of 126 feet even, and Malek-Madani threw 118-11 to finish seventh.
In the shot put, Minerich had a winning throw of 44' 2", and Benson finished fifth with a heave of 37' 7.5".
On the track Cade Meilner shaved more than four seconds off of his personal best time in the 800m to place sixth with a time of 2:14.18. In a competitive field that saw Montrose set a new meet record, Meilner, Eli Etter, Logan Green and Ben O'Rourke finished seventh in the 4x800 with a time of 9:28.83.
In the 800-meter sprint medley team of Jesse Burns, Michael Hofmann, Jonas Johnson and Cyrus Malek-Madani placed fifth.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
