Plan for hemp facility in Paonia under review

By Tamie Meck

The Paonia Town Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at Town Hall to consider a request for a special review/variance application to operate a commercial hemp business.

Applicant Elliot Brown submitted plans for the facility, which includes installation of climate and odor control infrastructure and other changes to property located at 719 Second Street. The property is currently zoned "Light Industrial." No walk-in retail sales are anticipated, according to the application submitted May 24. The applicant anticipates the business will employ one to five people up to seven days per week. The business will have "minimal impact, minimal noise," and no light will escape the building. If constructed, a greenhouse would "appear 'lit' for several hours in the morning and evening."

While a previous tenant had odor control issues, "...this should be straight forward and easy to correct," according to the applicant. "Carbon scrubbers will filter odors from air... Exhaust ducting will contain ozone generation equipment ensuring no odors escape the building."

Based on the review, the commission will make its recommendations to the Paonia Board of Trustees for consideration.
